Let us take you through the story of Sakaya

Sakaya (酒屋) literally means “sake shop” in Japanese, a place where people gather to discover sake, talk about it, and connect over it. That spirit is at the heart of what we do.

We’re dedicated to sharing the true spirit of Japanese sake with the world. Based in Japan, we work closely with breweries across the country and have built personal, trusted relationships with sake makers throughout Japan.

With 35+ offices nationwide and 300+ staff dedicated to product development, we uncover and develop rare regional treasures—bringing forward stories, flavors, and craftsmanship that often remain local and undiscovered beyond their communities.

Our mission is simple: to make authentic sake accessible and inspiring.

Sakaya is built on a simple but important idea: making exceptional sake available in small quantities, so even the smallest breweries can reach people abroad. Many of these producers craft sake by hand in limited volumes and remain unknown outside their region, not because their sake isn’t outstanding, but because exporting at scale is difficult.

That’s why Sakaya focuses on precious local sakes that have not yet been exported overseas. By working in small batches and small formats, we can introduce rare and distinctive sakes internationally, without asking breweries to take on the risks of large-scale export.

Small quantities, many ways to enjoy

To make discovery easy and approachable, we offer sake in small portions and different forms, such as pouches, small bottles, and other convenient sizes, so you can explore more varieties, compare styles, and find what you love without committing to a full bottle every time.

Junmai, always

We are committed to junmai-shu (純米酒) pure rice sake—because it reflects the brewery’s true character: the rice, the water, the craftsmanship, and the place it comes from.

A monthly journey through Japan

Each month, you get to discover different sakes through Sakaya. We carefully curate premium selections that showcase the diversity of Japan’s sake culture from crisp and delicate to rich and complex, from mountain villages to coastal regions. It’s a monthly journey through styles, rice varieties, brewing methods, and local character, allowing you to explore at your own pace.

Made for sharing and gifting

Sake is more than a beverage; it’s a story of craftsmanship, history, and community passed down through generations. And because sake is often shared at meaningful moments, Sakaya also offers gift-ready service with Japanese-style wrapping, making it perfect for celebrations, thank-yous, and special occasions.

Through authenticity, accessibility, and education, we aim to open the world of sake to more people, while supporting the artisans who pour their heart into every drop.

Above all, we believe in connection: between people, cultures, and moments. Each sip is a bridge from a quiet village in Japan to your home, from centuries of brewing tradition to your next shared toast.
